Design guide
How to brief a designer for album artwork
A strong album artwork brief gives the designer enough context to make decisions without closing down the visual possibilities.
Explain the release properly
Include the artist name, release title, track context, genre, mood, audience and where the artwork will appear. The designer needs to understand the release, not just the cover size.
Use references to describe direction
Reference images are useful when they explain tone, colour, texture or layout. They are less useful if they become a request to copy another release.
Send usable assets
Provide logos, photographs, existing artwork, label requirements and any mandatory text early. Low-resolution or late assets can limit the final design.
Confirm deliverable formats
Album artwork may need square cover files, streaming artwork, social crops, print-ready files, posters or physical packaging. Define this before the work is scoped.
Keep feedback connected to the brief
Good feedback explains what is and is not working against the release goals. It is more useful than asking for disconnected visual changes without context.
