Designing posters for theatre and live events
A live event poster has to create interest and communicate the practical details without making the viewer work too hard.
Find the visual hook
A poster needs a clear visual reason to look. That may be a strong image, a typographic system, an object, a character or an abstract idea from the work.
Build a clear information hierarchy
Title, date, venue, ticket link, credits and partner logos cannot all shout at once. Decide what the viewer needs to see first, second and third.
Design for more than one format
The same design often needs print, square social posts, portrait stories and website banners. Build the poster system so it can adapt without losing the main idea.
Protect legibility
Interesting texture and expressive type are useful only if the core information remains readable. This matters even more when posters are seen quickly on phones.
Connect the poster to the wider project
The poster should feel like part of the show or event, not a disconnected flyer. Colour, tone and imagery should support the work itself.
