Archival filming vs promotional filming
A full archive and a promotional film are not the same deliverable. They can come from the same performance, but they have different jobs.
What archival filming is for
An archival recording preserves the show as clearly and completely as possible. It is often used by artists, directors, funders, venues and future collaborators to understand the full work.
What promotional filming is for
Promotional material is selective. It uses the strongest moments, clean audio, pacing and structure to make someone want to see, book or support the work.
Why the filming plan may change
Archive coverage needs reliability and continuity. Promotional coverage benefits from detail, reaction, atmosphere and moments that can survive outside the full context of the show.
How the edit changes
An archival edit usually follows the performance. A promotional edit may reorder moments, use music or captions, and build a tighter rhythm for social media or press use.
When you need both
Many theatre-makers and performers need a full record for internal use and shorter public clips for promotion. Planning both from the start makes the filming day more efficient.
